Trials – Startlist.

Thank you’s to Robin from WWGym for typing out the list of who-starts-where. It’s always helpful – now I can approximate a good time to water my plants, feed my cat, or fill my glass of wine (when Raisman is on bars).

Kind of nice that no one has to start on beam. Liukin starts on bars. Again.

I only kind of just noticed that Alicia is not doing floor. Again.

Here’s an interview with her courtesy of Gymnastike.

Not that I think she has the greatest shot of making the team to begin with, I’m disappointed that she’s not doing floor. An extra event would greatly help her cause in my opinion.

What I get from the interview is that she has all of her passes back, but didn’t have time to put a routine together. Alicia, this is Olympic Trials – you MAKE time.

As our friend Odessa suggests, “recycle old choreography. Find some music that doesn’t require a lot. Hell, use the 2011 routine! Plenty of gymnasts use routines for 1-3 years.”

I concur.

Or does she mean that she doesn’t have the endurance to do an entire floor routine but doesn’t want to admit it? Protecting injury? Even if she isn’t necessarily needed for floor, I was really hoping that she’d go balls to the walls in what could be her last competition.

Alicia is a sentimental favorite of mine, so I’m mildly disappointed. I wanted something more than the same vaults she’s been doing since Calvin Coolidge was in office, and the slapping thighs beam poses we’ve grown accustomed to. And this god awful thing :

Suffice it to say that I’m bored with her.

Alicia has been historically quick to point out the importance of her leadership role. So what I did like about the interview is that she acknowledges that being a “leader” isn’t solely enough to get her on the team.

She does look good (and aggressive), I must say :

Loving her tour jeté 1/2 – that sucker is miles above the beam. I’m also loving the face she makes @ 1:10 before deciding to repeat a botched combo.

For those of us in the east, NBC Sports (formerly Versus) will be broadcasting from 9 – 11 PM on Friday (day 1), and 9-11 PM on Sunday (day 2).

Clara & I will do our best to dish our post meet reflections.

xo,

Bronwyn

    LOL!!!
Do you find it funny that they put all the MUSCLE girls on vault and the elegent girls on bars to start things off?

  • Sasha

Did you need to refill your glass of wine both during AND after Raisman’s bars?

  • Gymistoosad

The team will be -Wieber Douglas Raisman Michaela & Ross.

Wieber for v & floor & Ross is the best bars/beam combo .

Feet aren’t the only thing people put there Christiane. Think of the rufolvas!

ROFLOL! Okay, I am originally from Brazil so it took me a minute to figure out what you meant! Hehe, you girls are naughty, naughty (and I love it, of course…).

And talking about Brazil, what is wrong with Jade B.?? She went crazy or something??

  • Catherine

Well that’s it really, if she can do leaps and splits fine but they’re not her strong point, why would she take this opportunity to showcase that? Plenty of other ways to fulfil that requirement.

  • Kate

Everytime I see Alicia do that mouth-to-beam pose, it seems to be that her flexibility has downed a notch or two. I’m wondering if it has less to do with the flexibility in her legs than in her back.

It’s so clear that Aly and Alicia both come from the same gym when they are on beam. I’ve never understood Alicia’s face stand on beam, since she’s not flexible enough to make it work. Holly Vise had a similar skill that was exceptional. And Aly’s “I have to have a low beam requirement so I’m going to do an awkward stretch and then get back up again” is hard to watch.

  • Christiane

That pose always makes me nervous… Why would you want to put your mouth and nose where people put their feet?? Plus all that chalk… Horrible.

Alicia is my sentimental favorite. I hope she gets to go to the games, even as an alternate. However, what I REALLY want her to do is to take over Elfi’s job. For serious. How awesome would she be as a commentator?

  • Stoi!

I think Alicia has said she tends to use strength rather than flexibility to hit her leap positions. She’s not the worst out there though.

LOL, always nice when someone types out things, so you can just copy and paste it 🙂

I think Alicia does not quite have enough endurance yet to do a full floor routine, she has done very well to come back though.

Catherine – I don’t know that Alicia has a lack of flexibility. She has no problem hitting splits on leaps on floor. Her leaps on beam are far from fantastic, but not nearly as bad as Aly’s.

I always thought that nasty chest stand was an opportunity for her to rest. But maybe she could have picked something a little more aesthetically pleasing. Like a scale. Or well, anything.

Robyn – I don’t think she incurs a deduction for not hitting 180 on it. But I would probably take a composition deduction. It totally ruins any flow that she has going on.

Hate Alicia’s low-to-beam, why does she want to show the judges her lack of flexibility? Aly’s is awful too, a real here I go I have to go and lie on the beam now. Bleurghh.

  • Robyn

Why does she do that weird-ass chin stand thing when her split is NEVER 180? Why would her coaches let her keep it in? I don’t really know the ins and outs of scoring, but wouldn’t she get docked there for not showing full splits?
