This weekend, we learned that the upcoming American Cup, known to fans as ‘Scam’ and for good reason, will be ornamented by the presence of the lovely Gabrielle Douglas. Surprise world team member and Stoi! favourite, she’s going to compete exhibition following an excellent AA performance at camp.
We’ve been looking for an excuse to post this picture of Douglas and another icon of ours, the evergreen Dominique Dawes, for ages.
Now, the rules for qualification to the world cup circuit are beyond complex. The only person on the planet who actually understands them is Alar from TAAF. Not that it matters, because what tends to happen is that the roster is unable to be filled through the normal channels, so the organisers just invite whoever else they want. That’s how Wieber ended up doing Scam last year. There were lots of complaints. The fact she clearly knew she was competing some weeks before the rule change allowing her to do so was announced did rather reek of rotten fish.
But fair or not, better that than a half empty roster. The rules are unrealistic, and people pull out at the last minute. This year, Nadine Jarosh of Germany has withdrawn, and will be replaced by Victoria Moors of Canada. There is no possible interpretation of the selection criteria that would allow Moors to qualify. We are not at all concerned about her being there- she did some crisp, very well presented work at the Test Event- but let’s be honest, they’re just making it up as they go along now.
With this in mind, should Douglas end up competing rather than just exhibitioning, Stoi! would not be a bit sad about it. Indeed, we would be rooting hard for her to beat the Sisters Of Perpetual Flexed Footedness, who currently occupy the two US spots. She apparently did so at the recent camp- we hear whispers of a rumoured 62 AA score. And of course, she’s working on an Amanar.
The easy lift she gets on her DTY leaves us no doubt that an upgrade is possible. We now look forward to Scam that bit more.
