Regular readers will be aware of Stoi!’s love for British commentary. Bronwyn favours Monica Phelps, I St Barry. Recently I was watching the BBC coverage of the 2000 Olympic all-around. It’s fabulous. It was live, so you get to see everything, even the unscheduled fifth rotation.
At 2.15, near the start of the third rotation, Barry utters the following immortal words:
They’re now warming up on the vault, which seems to be back as it should be. I bet Khorkina wishes they could find some kind of problem with it, and have to go again. But it’s not going to happen.
I’m not making that up, I promise. Watch it if you don’t believe me.
I always knew he was magnificent. I didn’t know he could see the future as well.

He was absolutely lovely when I had a natter to him at 2006 figure skating euros in Lyon – seemed overly happy to see a Brit TBH. He always seemed to give the impression he wasn’t too fond of the French…

On the psychic thing, there’s another very creepy one from him but in skating not gymnastics. During the gala for the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics, the gold medal winners did 2 pieces. During the changeover from one to the other for Gordeeva and Grinkov, Barry said something like “I am sure I am not the only person who wonders how Ekaterina would have been as a skater without him (Sergei) but I don’t suppose we’ll ever find out…” – as am sure you lovely ladies know, Sergei collapsed from a heart problem while training and died shortly afterwards. Not *as* psychic as the Khorkina one but weird nevertheless.
